School Services:

 

Liaisons            "School liaisons" are assigned to each public school district [11 school districts] in Jefferson County and several private/parochial schools one day per week: a) to triage and facilitate access of children and their families to community mental health services on site or through community vendors and b) to provide each school district with training/education information in regard to psychiatric issues, violence prevention and chemical abuse as desired.  Some of the services which can be provided by or facilitated through the liaisons include:

 

·        Consultation with teachers, counselors or administrators regarding a particular child or issue.

·        Crisis/disaster counseling and facilitation of a crisis or disaster response by Comtrea staff in conjunction with the respective school.

·        After care and continuing care of children who are seeing a counselor or psychiatrist (either Comtrea or other).

·        Initial evaluation and referral of individuals and or families to Comtrea counselors and/or psychiatrist or psychologist (liaison referrals are considered priority referrals).

·        Individual counseling and/or group counseling (with parental and school permission) as time allows.

·        Family consultation and evaluation.

·        Classroom Presentations/staff/parental groups presentations on these general topics or other related ones:

There are no charges for these 45 minute to one hour presentations; however, they are provided based on staff availability.  Extensive training and education for large groups of students or faculty members on these topics or others are available at a reasonable fee.  One very popular program for students is on sexual harassment. 

 

Professional Training         Professional training is available upon arrangement.  CEU=s are often available through an arrangement with St. Louis University and a small (usually $9) processing fee.  The fees for the professional training programs listed below are: $400 for up to 25 participants; $25 per participant above 25.  The workshops are usually two to three hours. Programs are available on site or in our training facility in Arnold.

 

Chemical Abuse for Teachers

GOAL: To explore ways of dealing with the problems of alcohol and other chemical abuse from the viewpoint of the school.

 

Sexual Harassment for Staff

GOAL: To help participants: 1. Learn the definition of sexual harassment; 2. Examine beliefs about gender roles and stereotypes; 3. Understand some of the reasons why people harass others; 4. Become aware of the damaging results of sexual harassment to the victim and the organization;  5. Reflect on their attitudes toward the opposite sex; and 6. Learn how to react to sexual harassment of themselves, peers, or students.

 

Preventing Teacher Burnout

GOAL: To increase the awareness of the factors which cause teacher burnout by identifying ways teachers choose to care or not care for themselves; by learning techniques, theories and alternative behavior choices that will enable participants to take better care of themselves both personally and professionally.

 

Teaching Children of Divorce

GOAL: To increase participants= awareness of the effect of the divorce process on children and examine ways of assisting young people during a difficult period.

 

Dealing with Classroom Conflict

GOAL: To learn styles and strategies for managing conflict in a constructive way in the classroom and to create a forum for sharing ideas about dealing with conflict in the classroom.

 

Developing Positive Self-Concept in the Classroom

GOAL: To increase one's awareness of ways to enhance self‑concept by learning theory about self‑concept; by learning strategies and sharing ideas for enhancing self‑concept in the classroom.

 

Motivation in the Classroom

GOAL: To learn more about motivation for use in the classroom by experiencing personally what causes one to feel motivated or unmotivated; by learning techniques for motivating students.

 

Crisis Response for Schools   Comtrea CMHC, Hopewell CMHC, Crider CMHC and Barnes, Jewish, Christian Behavioral Health System, have combined to create BHR (Behavioral Health Response).  This organization can respond telephonically and, in appropriate instances, with a mobile crisis outreach team.  Actively suicidal situations, trauma situations resultant from violence or catastrophe, can be assisted by calling (314)469-1500.  BHR serves as a “back-up” to Comtrea in Jefferson County should they be needed to augment Comtrea’s crisis response team.
